Fatal Frame 5 Coming West?

There’s little denying the high regard horror aficionados hold the Fatal Frame series in, however that enthusiasm has very rarely translated into sales and thus the last two entries in the franchise have failed to make their way out of Japan.
True fans never give up hope though and this week that hope was bolstered by Team Ninja founder Tomonobu Itagaki who posted this on his Facebook page.

“I strongly believe that Kikuchi Keisuke (Producer of Fatal Frame 1, 2 and 3) will release Fatal Frame 5 in America, in many countries,”

While Mr. Itagaki’s comments are encouraging it should be noted that neither Mr. Keisuke or Tecmo for that matter actually own the Fatal Frame series, Nintendo does, and as such Nintendo is entirely in control of when and if Fatal Frame V is ever released outside of Japan. That said, Tomonobu Itagaki was once a big name at Tecmo and he and Kikuchi Keisuke’s friendship is well established so maybe just maybe there’s something in his comment.

  1. Itagaki’s word is hard to take, as much as I adore his old work. That being said I hope Nintendo brings it over but they’re such a conservative company in the west (exception being Bayonetta) and Fatal Frame has been a modestly successful franchise in the past. Tecmo still has a say as developer and co-publisher, but Nintendo has final say since its their system and they have controlling stake in this and future games.

    1. I’m a fan of Itagakis as well and am really looking forward to Devil’s Third but its true, you really do have to take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

As for Fatal Frame well, I’m not entirely sure why Nintendo have chosen to invest in a franchise which they apparently believe only has local (Japan) appeal. Much like the original Xenoblade Chronicles/The Last Story localization debacle it some times seems Nintendo forget that they’re an international corporation first and Japanese company second.
