It’s rare to see a first party developer go third party but even rarer to see one with the word Sony in their name, and yet that is exactly what happened on Monday when Sony Online Entertainment, creators of H1Z1, the EverQuest series and DC Universe Online announced that they had been acquired by investment firm Columbus Nova.
“We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming,” commented John Smedley, who will continue on as president of the newly named Daybreak Game Company before adding.
“We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live,”
Alongside the acquisition announcement and name change Mr. Smedley went on to reassure fans of H1Z1, DC Universe Online and EverQuest Next that support for their favourite games would continue regardless of the move away from Sony.
