The Price Of Victory?

E3 2014

Street Fighter 5 might not have actually been at E3 this year but that hasn’t stopped some of Capcom’s key figures dropping hints about what we should expect from the fifth instalment of the long running brawler when it gets here. Some of these musings have been less than pleasing to fans’ ears, especially those of Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto who has suggested that some kind of “pay to win” mechanic could be implemented in order to even the playing field between good and bad players.
“We’d like to steer away from making the next game such that skilled players will win, but unskilled players will lose almost instantaneously,”
Mr. Tsujimoto went on to suggest a pay-for-advantage system in Street Fighter 5 would allow new players to cover for their lack of skill in matches and as you can guess that idea has not gone down well with the fans. So annoyed did fans become in fact that Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono had to take to twitter and refute the claims saying.
“The SFV news today about a pay to win model is not accurate and isn’t something we’re planning for. Sorry for the confusion! We’re still in early planning stages and will share more at a later date.”
So can you pay to win in the next Street Fighter or not? It seems not even those working at Capcom can agree but if I had to put money on it I’d bet there will be some monetary advantage system of some kind, Capcom are all about their bottom line these day after all.
