Super Smash Bros. U Drops Subspace Emissary.

In his weekly Famitsu column Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed that neither Super Smash Bros. U or Super Smash Bros. 3DS will feature a story or Subspace Emissary mode or any CG cutscenes… thanks to the internet?
“Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create (in Brawl) were uploaded onto the internet and you can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. So I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them at all.”
Claimed Mr. Sakurai before adding that along with the absence of cutscenes no story mode would be included in the new games either. An admission which, along with the ludicrous video upload excuse is likely to further annoy fans who are already less than pleased with the promise of a scaled back roster and the inclusion of Wii Fit Trainer.

  1. I think the excuse is terrible, but people don’t really buy a fighting game for the story unless it’s, maybe, Persona 4 Arena. I’m okay with them not being in the game, but his reasoning.. it’s kind of a “take my ball and go home” reply.

  2. Story mode or no story mode I can’t see Smash Bros being too badly affected,
I just wish certain people in Nintendo would think twice before saying or writing stuff like this.

    1. They’ve definitely had a “speak first, think second” approach in the media as of late. Between this, flip-flopping on Smash Bros EVO streaming and their poor excuse for keeping region locking on the Wii U/3DS, you figure they’d actually *try* to think things through for consumer relations.
